150 wagons loaded and dispatched in three days

Shipment shows we are back on track

The welcome sight of 150 fully laden rail wagons leaving the Whyalla Steelworks was not only a sign the mining and steelmaking operations are back on track but also symbolic of the continued dedication and passion of OneSteel employees.

The Whyalla operations of OneSteel Manufacturing Pty Ltd (Administrators Appointed) (OneSteel) late last year loaded and dispatched the wagons, containing nearly 8500 tonnes of finish goods, in just three days.

This logistical feat was testament to the skill and coordination of the operators on the ground and in the offices that has the steelworks back running at full capacity under administration and with the benefit of rescue package funding from the South Australian and Federal governments.

We’re all here to mine ore, make steel and ship it to customers … these wagons show we are back online and back to doing what we do best

Hayley Perkins

OneSteel General Manager Supply Chain, Hayley Perkins said it was the largest single dispatch from the steelworks in nearly ten years and a significant achievement that can attributed to a focus on collaboration across the operation.

“This wasn’t just pure luck, this was the tail-end of a well-drilled combination of planning, production, inventory and logistics,” Hayley said.

“It was an all-round team effort from the site services/material handling team specifically David Harrison, Brad Prince, Phil Hillman and Noel Goldsworthy (Transport team).”

Hayley said the recent dispatch was particularly satisfying for every OneSteel employee from the miners to the pellet plant, steelmakers, steel products, dispatch and administration.

“You can see the genuine pride in the workers when we achieve these sort of results,” Hayley said. “The satisfaction of seeing these goods go out to our customers is shared across our operations.

The 150 wagons contained loads of finished structural products, channel rails, finished angles, beams and billets that will be delivered to various customers throughout Australia.
