Call for apprentices to start in 2027
Opportunities at steelworks and iron ore mines
OneSteel Manufacturing is seeking young people interested in an apprenticeship at the Whyalla steelworks or iron ore mine operations.
Under the OneSteel Manufacturing 2027 Apprenticeship Program, interest is being sought from school leavers and those already in the workforce to start apprenticeships next year as mechanical fitters, fabricators and electricians.
OneSteel Manufacturing (Administrators Appointed) (OneSteel), through its Workforce Development Pipelines Program, has onboarded more than 130 apprentices since 2020. 23 of these apprentices completed their training and became fulltime tradespeople earlier this year while the 2026 apprenticeship program saw 27 new apprentices start their career path in February this year.

Workforce Development Lead Early Careers, Rebecca Harris said the 2027 apprentice intake was a fantastic opportunity, particularly for Whyalla-based school leavers, to jump straight into a worthwhile and rewarding career in manufacturing and mining.
“This is real work with real outcomes to earn while you learn, gain formal trade qualifications and invaluable exposure to local manufacturing and mining operations,” Rebecca said.
“It’s a chance to dive into the heart of Australia’s industrial and mining sectors and immerse yourself into a career pathway from day one.
“Our expertise as a fully integrated steelworks and mining operation enables our apprentices and employees to explore truly diverse career paths within manufacturing, engineering, marketing, sales, and many more streams.”
The apprenticeships are being offered on a fulltime basis with a four-year contract at the steelworks or mines. Training is conducted on-site and through various training providers including TAFE SA in Whyalla.
“Our apprenticeships offer a great mix of practical work experience and technical learning, including hands-on experience on-site with tools, equipment, and machinery relevant to their trade,” Rebecca said.
“Our apprentices get guidance from experienced trades and engineering professionals, tap into their team’s knowledge, and tackle challenges that help them grow.”
Applicant must have either completed Year 11 at high school and had a minimum of 12 months work experience or completed Year 11 in 2026 and are on the pathway to gaining a high school certificate. They also need to be safety-focused, team-orientated, good interpersonal skills, Australian residency and a P1 drivers’ licence by January 2027.
