Pellet Plant raises $300 for Whyalla scouts

Workers and admin staff embrace community spirit

14 November 2025

The Pellet Plant and its supporting administration doesn’t just produce iron ore filter cake and pellets … it recycles aluminium and produces cash for the community.

We’re talking aluminium cans, the soft drink type, all donated by workers at the Pellet Plant and administration blocks 3 and 5 at the OneSteel Manufacturing Pty Ltd (Administrators Appointed) (OneSteel) operations through a new initiative.

Kicked off by a team at the pellet plant, it is a simple activity that has been embraced by everyone at the respective operations and one that is now making a big difference with $300 worth of cans recently bagged up and handed over to the Whyalla Scout Group.

A huge thank you to everyone at the pellet plant and administration blocks for your support

A driving force behind the initiative, and a former scout leader, Whyalla Iron Ore Superintendent Shutdowns Scott Ramsay thanked everyone that had dropped a can into the collections bins and those that helped coordinate the collections.

“Everyone at the plant and the admin blocks have been happy to put their 10-cent cans, into the bins provided, for a good cause,” Scott said.

“I love the fact that everyone is willing to help out community groups like this, groups that need funds to provide the best possible events and functions for kids in our community.”

Whyalla scout leader Christine Ernesti said the support was greatly appreciated by everyone at the local group.

“The money we will get from these cans will help in many ways,” Christine said.

“It helps us to provide more trips away, camps and excursions … all events that grow our youth and allow them to make new friends while enjoying journeys and adventures that the scout movement facilitates and encourages.

“A huge thank you to everyone at the pellet plant and administration blocks for your support.”

The collections bins are strategically placed around the pellet plant and admin blocks with all employees encouraged to donate their cans.

The Whyalla Scout Group runs a range of fun, adventurous, challenging and inclusive activities for youth aged between 5 and 26. Scouting activities are organised in age-based sections so each child can have fun and adventure with those of similar age.
