OneSteel plays important role in Christmas relief
OUr volunteers contribute to festive program
The Whyalla Christmas Relief program has wrapped up for another year as the planning starts again for next year’s OneSteel-supported community endeavour.
Volunteers were present at the D’Faces headquarters during the second week of December to distribute Christmas hampers, help wrap presents and hand out gifts for children and families less fortunate.
Also present was the Thread Together organisation that rescues surplus deleted brand clothing for inclusion in the Whyalla Christmas Relief program while many of the toys were collected by the annual Whyalla Toy Run and local business wishing trees.
OneSteel Manufacturing Pty Ltd (Administrators Appointed) (OneSteel) played its part with community sponsorship providing 200 food hampers with another 13 added from fundraising barbecues at the steelworks, while on-site can-recycling initiatives provided the money for wrapping paper.

Just as important as the cash support, was the OneSteel volunteers that backed up from fundraising and organising efforts throughout the year to make Christmas that little bit better for many.
That is what volunteering for this program is all about, creating a safe and friendly environment that makes receiving that little bit of extra help at Christmas a positive experience
Dan Bateman
OneSteel Community and Stakeholder Coordinator, Dan Bateman paid tribute to every organisation and individual in the Whyalla community that pulled together for the program while giving special thanks to the OneSteel volunteers and everyone that attended the barbecues or collected cans.

“It was an outstanding effort by everyone involved as we make a real difference for families feeling the financial pressure this festive season,” Dan said.
“The efforts and generosity of the Whyalla community helped bring joy and hope to those that need it the most this Christmas.”
We are fortunate to be in the position where we can give something back to the community in a very special way

Nominated families walking through the doors were able to collect Christmas food hampers, toy gifts and select clothing for the family from the amazing array of clothes provided by Thread Together.
“People are always a bit apprehensive as they come in but you see their faces light up as they receive a hamper, get that special toy or find that dress or outfit for their kids, it is just priceless,” Dan said.
“Witnessing a mother almost in tears as she selected a beautiful designer dress for her little girl was heartwarming and there were so many similar moments throughout the week.”
Dan reflected on the experience, saying the rewards for volunteers far outweighed the time and effort invested in supporting the Whyalla Christmas Relief program.
“That is what volunteering for this program is all about, creating a safe and friendly environment that makes receiving that little bit of extra help at Christmas a positive experience,” she said.
“We are fortunate to be in the position where we can give something back to the community in a very special way … all you need is a little time, and a kind heart … that’s all it takes to bring joy to a family in need.”
