Steelworkers recognised for community work
WEll-deserved Australia Day awards
OneSteel Manufacturing employees Jodi Stringer and Darren Hoffman have been recognised for their community service at the Whyalla City Council 2026 Citizen of the Year Awards.
Presented with Community Service Awards as part of this year’s Australia Day Celebrations in Whyalla over the long weekend, Jodi is an Engineering Records Document Controller at the Whyalla Steelworks while Darren is an Electrical Services Technician at the steelmaking plant.

Darren was recognised for more than 30-years involvement with the Whyalla Basketball Association while Jodi’s award was reward for her work at the Roopena Netball Club and the broader sporting community.

Steelworks General Manager of Operations, Amrit Mangat said both awards were richly deserved and everyone at OneSteel Manufacturing Pty Ltd (Administrators Appointed) (OneSteel) should be incredibly proud of their achievements.

Whyalla Mayor Phill Stone said the awards were a chance to shine a spotlight on the people who quietly go above and beyond for their community.
“One of the best things about living in Whyalla is the people and every year these awards remind us just how lucky we are,” Mayor Stone said.
“From volunteers who never miss a shift, to community champions who’ve been giving their time for decades, these recipients are the kind of people who don’t do it for recognition, they do it because they care.”
“On behalf of council and the community, I’d like to say thank you and congratulations to each of this year’s award recipients. Whyalla is a better place because of you all.”

In announcing the awards, the City of Whyalla made the following comments on Jodi and Darren’s contributions to the community:
Jodi Stringer – Community Service Award
Jodi was recognised for her outstanding dedication to the Roopena Netball Club and the broader sporting community, serving on the club committee for 15 years, including six years as President. She continues to contribute as treasurer, coach, umpire and mentor, supporting players and developing the next generation of officials.
Jodi also volunteers her time across fundraising initiatives, community events and local arts and sporting activities. Her leadership, work ethic and passion for community service has made a lasting impact on Whyalla.
Darren Hoffman – Community Service Award
Darren has been a cornerstone of the Whyalla Basketball Association for more than 30 years, contributing across administration, competition organisation, officiating and facility development. He plays a crucial role in scheduling hundreds of games each season, supporting junior development programs and mentoring referees.
Darren’s behind-the-scenes work ensures basketball remains accessible, welcoming and well-organised for hundreds of local families. His dedication, leadership and long-term commitment have shaped the sport in Whyalla.
