Queensland Rail visit reinforces partnership with OneSteel
Whyalla engagement with significant customer
Queensland Rail has joined the growing list of key partners and stakeholders that have recently visited the Whyalla Steelworks to see the plant in operation and meet with key personnel on site.
Queensland Rail (QR) runs the suburban and interurban rail services in South East Queensland along with long-distance passenger train services connecting Brisbane to regional Queensland while also maintaining rolling stock and its significant rail network.

QR is a major long-term partner of OneSteel Manufacturing Pty Ltd (Administrators Appointed) (OneSteel) with thousands of tonnes of rail supplied annually for various projects and maintenance programs across its network.
It was important for QR to see Whyalla back on track and continuing its commitment to ongoing rail supply
Head of Sales and Marketing Ashleigh Williams
Head of Sales and Marketing Ashleigh Williams said the QR visit continued OneSteel’s proactive engagement with partners and stakeholders with the Queensland State Government-owned entity one of the steelworks’ biggest customers.
“Queensland Rail was keen to gain an understanding of the stability measures and business improvements under the care of administrators KordaMentha with the backing of the South Australian and Federal governments’ support package,” Ashleigh said.

“It was an extremely positive and productive visit.
“We were able to take the QR contingent on a special twilight tour of the rolling mill, followed by an extensive visit to the rail plant, hosted by Aleksej Zavrid and Lewis Jones.
“We also took the time to show the group around the wonderful city of Whyalla.”
Ashleigh said the visit was not only timely to reinforce the steelworks was now running at near capacity but it also instilled further confidence for the visitors as QR prepares for major infrastructure upgrades in the coming years to support population growth and for the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane.
“It was important for QR to see Whyalla back on track and continuing its commitment to ongoing rail supply,” Ashleigh said.
“Across December and January we are delivering a major tranche of rail for QR re-railing programs in 2026.”
