Community
We have made a commitment to develop sustainable industry and strong communities for generations to come.
Overview
Our vision is to have a positive impact on our community, economy and environment by openly engaging our employees and stakeholders and delivering on our commitments. Our vision guides how think about our role in the community, how we can enable change and the way in which we do this to achieve a sustainable future.
Local community support, sponsorship and events
Through the OneSteel Manufacturing Pty Ltd (Administrators Appointed) Community Support Program we provide investment in the communities in which we operate through financial and in-kind support.
We seek to invest in and contribute to the empowerment and development of communities.

Our community program is underpinned by 6 key drivers:
- Active communication with our communities and stakeholders
- Proactive engagement and credible complaint management
- Category-based support programs based on needs
- Being an engaged and positive member of regional communities
- Engaged and respectful relationships with traditional owners
- Responsible and engaged relationships with landholders.
For more than 25 years, our program has fostered meaningful partnerships that continue to make a lasting impact across Whyalla, Iron Knob and Ardrossan. Through our long-term collaboration and sustained support, we’ve helped deliver initiatives that strengthen community connections and celebrate local culture.
In addition to financial contributions, we actively explore non-financial ways to support the communities in which we operate. This includes providing volunteers for local events – such as assisting with set up for the annual Whyalla Show or our partnership with HOPE Whyalla. We also consider requests for material donations on a case-by-case basis, with applications assessed on merit and scale. This flexible approach ensures our support is both responsive and meaningful.
Sponsorship and support opportunities are available to community groups and initiatives based in Whyalla, Ardrossan and Iron Knob.

Celebrating Community Spirit
The 2025 Christmas on the Avenue Working Group & Family & Friends of OneSteel Manufacturing’s Polar Express 2024 Float

Celebrating Christmas in Whyalla
OneSteel Manufacturing is proud to be a major sponsor of Christmas on the Avenue, which includes the OneSteel Christmas Pageant and the OneSteel after-pageant fair, which is followed by Community Christmas Carols. In recent years, the pageant has moved to Nicolson Avenue, while the carols continue to be held at Civic Park, creating a vibrant and inclusive space for families across the region.
In addition to sponsorship, OneSteel plays an active role in the planning of Christmas on the Avenue as part of the dedicated working group led by the Whyalla City Council. This group brings together local businesses, service providers and community organisations to collaboratively deliver an inclusive festive experience. Our combined efforts ensure the pageant is delivered with the community at heart while the Whyalla Show Society plays the key role in organising the After-Pageant Fair and Carols. Each year doing a remarkable job to expand and enhance these celebrations for the benefit of the entire community.

Friends and Family of OneSteel Manufacturing can register their interest to participate in the Polar Express Float via [email protected]

Stakeholder engagement

OneSteel Manufacturing is committed to engaging with its stakeholders including community and landowners where it operates to ensure members are kept informed and consulted.
Our approach is to share information on our operations, our opportunities, and our challenges and to treat our stakeholders as valued partners.
Environment Consultation Group
The Whyalla based Environment Consultation Group (ECG) is a valued community reference group made up with members representing the community, local business, Whyalla City Council, the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), Natural Resources Management and currently chaired by state MP Mr Eddie Hughes. The group meets quarterly and is a long standing and mature group that provides open and honest feedback to the operators of the Whyalla Steelworks and mining in the Middleback Ranges. OneSteel facilitates the group but other industries in the region are also able to provide information to the group or seek feedback.
Traditional Owners
OneSteel acknowledges the lands on which it operates and does business – Barngarla Country, Narungga Country and Kaurna Country. It is committed to continuing to work with the Traditional owners to create strong relationships and opportunities to develop and build a shared and sustainable future.
Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA)
OneSteel Manufacturing is proud of its relationship with the Traditional Owners of Barngarla Country, the Barngarla People. It finalised an updated Indigenous Land Use Agreement in 2023 which provides for a strong framework for the parties to work together. This was a significant step for the future of OneSteel manufacturing and the Barngarla People.
Past partnership

Walga Mining is an Indigenous owned business which had a long-standing contract to process iron ore at OneSteel Manufacturing’s Iron Knob Mining Area. Iron Knob is currently in care and maintenance.
Cultural Heritage

OneSteel recognises the importance of Aboriginal Heritage, and it has developed protocols with the Traditional Owners of Barngarla Country that includes heritage awareness training which is undertaken by its employees, contractors and consultants as well as conducting heritage surveys prior to any exploration and mining activities.
Local use of Donated steel

Whyalla Jetty
Whyalla Steelworks donated about $300,000 of steel to the Whyalla City Council’s Jetty project, which was completed in September 2020. The jetty stretches 165m from the shore and features steel that was recycled from scrap steel taken from the original jetty.
The original jetty, built in the 1970s, used steel that was manufactured from our steelworks.
The circular design of the jetty itself is a fitting nod to the circular, recyclable nature of its structural material.
